1.5 years since E2 contamination

Lina trudged up to the E2 portal again. This was her fifth time being sent there in three months. She shook her head at the cloud of black in the center of it.

“Huh, the pfoteros are in mass quantity this time. Guess I have to keep dropping them one by one,” Lina said to Maut while ridding Merah of the flying rats with her blaster.

“Feel like helping me out a bit?” She nodded toward the pfoteros, and Maut jumped up.

Maut’s back legs lurched him forward, flying up to catch one, and he threw it to the ground. Lina blasted it into nothing. As the rest of them dropped out of existence with each press of the trigger, she muttered, “Good riddance.”

Behind the rush of the cloud, Lina saw a crouching figure. As she drew closer to the portal, the figure held up hands, the same way Emma did when she first met her. It stood slowly and grew tall with the rise of its body and finally, its head. Lina’s eyes met it determined and focused. She held her blaster high and focused. The creature had a lot of the same features of her E2 friend, but this wasn’t her.

In a steady and strong voice, she yelled at it, “Why have you travelled here, creature?”

Lina and Maut slowly walked closer and closer to the portal platform. She held her gaze steady while the creature’s face contorted in a rather confused fashion. She thought maybe it didn’t hear her. More loudly and slowly she asked, “What is the reason for your travels here?”

The humanoid shook its head, rubbed its eyes, and squeaked out, “My name is Dexter. I’m not here on purpose. I was searching for a lost friend of mine.” The creature held up its hands.

Lina squinted at the response. “And who, might I ask, is your lost friend?”

He looked down, shifted his weight, and eventually said, “Her name is Emma. She’s been missing and in my search for her, I ended up here.”

Lina peered at him. “And how would you describe this friend of yours?”

“She is tall, with light blonde hair and skin lighter than mine, and eyes that are so piercingly blue you would think they were from the sky… but not this sky of course. And when she smiles at you, it is in such a way that you know with every fiber of your being that she cares about you.” He stared off into the distance. Lina thought he looked sad.

“This creature must care a great deal for Emma,” Lina whispered to Maut, studying Dexter’s face. She cautiously lowered her blaster. “I believe that you have no ill will toward this Emma, but why did it take you so long to find this planet?”

“This planet…? I don’t even know what planet this is!”

“Your friend Emma is here. This planet is Merah, also known affectionately as the Red Planet.”

“Merah, the Red Planet… wait… You know who Emma is? SHE IS HERE?” The creature huffed in an excitement Lina had never seen before, then paused for a minute.
